Aluminum extrusion and aluminum welding go hand in hand. Extrusion allows for a variance in the thickness of the wall in whatever aluminum object that was created by the extrusion process. Because the wall can have a varying thickness throughout the object, that object can have something called a vee groove.
What is a vee groove? A vee groove is a V-shaped formation in a piece of metal. The vee groove facilitates performance of a welding process. The welding process is used to create a bond between two different metals.
If a vee groove exists in an aluminum part, that aluminum part can be welded to a different metal part. Aluminum welding is used to melt one metal part, a part that should be joined to another metal part. The heat from the welding device creates a small pool of liquid. That liquid forms a puddle in the vee groove.
The hot liquid is used to bond two different metals. The hot liquid in the vee groove coalesces around a section of each of the two different metal parts. Once the molten material has hardened, the metal objects have been fused together.
Coalescence permits the joining of aluminum and a second metal, but it is not the only scientific property that can aid formation of a metal to metal bond. Not every fusion of aluminum and a second metal has resulted from aluminum welding. Sometimes that fusion is produced by a process called brazing.
Brazing relies on the properties of capillary action. As in aluminum welding, in brazing a section of metal must be heated to the point where it enters a liquid state. That molten metal is then distributed on the close-fitting metal parts. After the liquid metal hardens, then the metal parts are firmly fused together.
Both aluminum welding and brazing can call for exposure of metals to a good deal of heat. Sometimes a metal worker does not want to expose a piece of metal to very high temperatures. If that piece of metal should be joined to another metal, then what process can the metal worker use?
When a metal worker faces the above-mentioned problem, then he or she needs to use a process called soldering. Soldering takes advantage of the low melting point of one metal, a metal different from the two metals that need to be joined together. Liquid from a metallic substance with a low melting point is used to create an adherence between two different metal parts.
Aluminum alloys do not always need to be joined by welding, brazing or soldering. Sometimes aluminum alloys have been held together by adhesive bonding. Aluminum horse trailers are popular because they are light and easy to haul. In most cases this is great, especially when it comes to yor gas mileage, but in some cases this can be a weakness. Not all aluminum trailers are created equally and some are weaker than others.
Be careful when choosing aluminum without finding out what will happen if your horse were to give the side of the trailer a really good kick. Single hung aluminum window glass repair


Let's talk about repairing broken glass in an aluminum frame single hung window. If it's the lower sash pane that is broken, it must be removed from the inside. You are going to have one of three different mechanisms that hold the lower sash up when you slide it open. If you can't see any mechanisms on the sides, then you have a block and tackle system consisting of a string and spring assembly. Find the thin metal clips in the side jambs just above the sash. Pull the bottom of the clip out using a screwdriver or your fingernail. Do that on both sides. Then remove any rubber stops at the very top of the window. Raise the window as high as it will go. The block and tackle assemblies will get snagged in the metal clips, allowing you to remove the window sash. You would replace the glass using the same method described in our article about sliding window repairs. Once you have the new glass installed, install the window panel in the reverse order that you removed it. Close the window and push the metal clips back. Install the rubber stops at the top.

If you have a mechanism across the top of the window with a string coming down each side and screwed into the top corners of the window sash, you need to remove the screws holding the strings in place. But before you remove the screws, you need to remove one of the black plastic pieces that cover the side jamb. Raise the window all the way up, then put a flat screwdriver at the very bottom of the plastic piece and pull outward until you can grab it with your fingers.
Slide the plastic out. Now remove the screws holding the strings. Be sure to hold the string in one hand while removing the screw, because the string is under tension. After removing the screw, let the string slowly go back up. Pull the panel to the side that you removed the black plastic piece, and remove the panel. Remember, two of your corner screws will be removed at this point, and the proper way to remove the frame from the glass is to remove opposite corner screws. So, you should put one of the string screws back in and remove the corner screw opposite the removed string screw. Then, when you install the new glass, remove the string screw and install the strings. Raise the window up and install the black plastic piece by sliding it up between the frame and side jamb.

The final mechanism will be a spiral metal rod. If you have this type, i suggest you have it done by a professional. If you aren't careful with these, you can wind up having to replace the spiral rods. Now, if the broken pane is the upper sash, more than likely it will be a fixed panel. You can take these out without messing with the sliding panel. Unlock the window and raise the lower sash a few inches. Remove the screen, then remove the two screws holding the horizontal bar on place. Tap the bar down in one corner using a hammer and screwdriver. The bar will come off.
Then you can grab the bottom of the upper sash and wiggle as you pull the sash downward. Once you have pulled it down several inches, you should be able to grab the top and bottom of the sash and pull to the left or right until the opposite side comes out. Then you can swing the panel out.

Once the new glass is installed, you can put the upper sash back by reversing the removal procedure. Tap the bottom upward with a hammer or rubber mallet, ensuring that the sash is fully seated in the top of the frame. Then, put the horizontal mulling bar back in place and tap it on the sash framer. Install the screws and screen. You're done. Next week we will cover broken glass repair of dual pane windows.

Aluminum or Steel Sailboats – Which is Better?


Most sailboats are fiberglass these days, but if you are looking for a really strong sailboat, you are likely to choose steel or aluminum. Fiberglass is fine for normal use, but if you are going cross oceans, or give your sailboat a hard life, metal is best. They are also good materials if you want to get your own design of sailboat built.

The reason aluminum or steel are best is that metals are both strong and stiff, and when hit really hard, they bend – fiberglass and even the most advanced composites will break, and even shatter. Then the sailboat will almost certainly sink. A sailboat with a dent in the hull can keep going.

There are other advantages, too. Fiberglass boats usually have separate keels that are bolted in place. The bolts 'work' in the retaining holes in the hull, enlarging then slightly, and after a few years you are likely to get leaks. Worse still, if you press your sailboat really hard, the bolts can break,and you lose the keel. This happens quite often in racing, and can happen to cruising sailboats as well.

The keel of a steel or aluminum boat is formed as part of the hull, so it cannot come off – and the ballast of lead or steel is encapsulated inside, where it cannot move.

If you are looking for a 20-28 foot sailboat to cruise around rivers, estuaries and a little offshore cruising, then fiberglass is fine. But if you want to go further, or you want your boat to be of a particular design, choose aluminum or steel. Many firms offer excellent designs for metal sailboats, and some offer sets of panels that you weld together – or have welded together – usually complete with instructions.

Twenty years ago, it was much easier to weld steel than aluminum, but with modern welding sets and alloys, aluminum can be welded easily with just a little training – hours not weeks. Therefore, more and more sailboats -and smaller motor boats - are being made from aluminum.
But the next question is: Should I choose steel or aluminum?

The things to be considered are:

1. Weight advantage of aluminum

Steel is stronger than aluminum, but this is not the advantage it seems with a sailboat because if the panels of the hull are too thin, they are difficult to weld without distortion, and you will end up with a hull with wavy panels. The minimum practical thickness is around 1/8 inch (3 mm) and an aluminum hull made from 3/16 inch (5 mm) plate is plenty strong enough for a 35-foot yacht and is lighter than the steel boat.

If you are building a 40 or 50 foot sailboat, the weight saving with aluminum over steel will be considerable – in all cases this allows the designer to put the weight where it is needed for a good motion at sea – in the keel. As a result, aluminum sailboats usually have a sea-kindly motion. With a racing boat, the reduced weight is an advantage, although a hull made completely from carbon fiber will be a bit lighter, but is brittle.

2. Long life

On the face of it, both steel and aluminum should last a long time, and both need some attention. Both can suffer from galvanic corrosion in salt water – especially in marinas – so you need more sacrificial anodes than with fiberglass, and you need to renew them regularly. Aluminum is at a slight disadvantage in this respect – you must maintain good anodes, but as these usually last more than a season this is not a problem.

Aluminum panels that are exposed to the atmosphere form an oxide film automatically, and this prevents further corrosion. So long as the panels are dry, they do not corrode. Therefore, it is best to leave most of the hull unpainted, and to coat the decks with non-slip panels – these are like rubber mats that are bonded in position - rather than non-slip paint for example.

With a little care, an aluminum hull will last a very long time. Steel is very different because it is always trying to corrode or rust away. It must be treated, then coated to give it protection. It is usually easy to see what is happening outside, and keep the hull in good shape, but not so easy to see what is happening in the bilges, and behind lockers and elsewhere. Almost always, after a few years, a steel hull will start to corrode on the inside, owing to condensation or water getting inside. Therefore, the steel boat is not so likely to last a long time without giving some trouble – unless it has very thick panels – like a ship, in which case it will be very heavy.

Expensive to Repair

When steel starts to rust badly, it costs a lot of money to repair. I have met several people who have had problems with steel sailboats. One couple I knew spent six months, working every day, to remove the rust from the hull of their steel sailboat. Fortunately, the hull was thick and had been well protected so it remained sound.

One sailboat that was about ten years old was found to have rusted badly through the whole hull– and needed repairing extensively, with new panels. The boat was worth about $30,000 in good condition, but it would cost $20,000 to strip the boat out for welding and then to refit it. On top of that the welding repairs would cost $10,000. In other words, the boat was almost worthless.

Another man I met had bought a 32 foot steel sailboat which was only a few years old. On the maiden voyage, he found water in the bilges which he discovered was leaking through the hull. He returned to port, got it safely to a suitable yard, and when I met him first he had started work on repairs.

This steel sailboat had cost $75,000, yet the hull was riddled with rust which in many places could be pushed through with a small screwdriver. He told me the rust was mostly along the weld joints and reinforcements.

I met him a year later, and he had finished welding up the hull. He had had to replace just about every panel below the water line, and was then fitting the boat out. He had help from his father and a friend, but he still reckoned it had cost him $70,000 to repair.

On balance, therefore, I recommend that you buy an aluminum sailboat rather than a steel one, and resist the temptation to paint the complete hull – just have a band painted on the topsides, and of course, epoxy coat the underwater hull before applying anti-fouling.

Metal Cleaning - Washing Long Aluminum Skin Panels


Large, aluminum door panels can be difficult pieces to clean. Used in many applications, including the construction of the United States Army's Hummer vehicle as a skin to be placed over the armor plate frame, these panels need to be cleaned quickly and efficiently. The original washer had a load/unload stage of 5', a wash stage of 16', and a spray length of 12'. The overall dimensions of the machine measured out to 7' W x 8'H x 76'L. The lanes will consist of flat wire belts on a roller bed, driven by the motor at approximately 8 feet per minute. Adjustable guide rails in the tall lane will allow the machine to handle 3 different widths of the panels.

Spray length will be reduced from 12' to 8'. By decreasing the pump size, from 500 gallons per minute to 300 gpm, but running at a higher PSI, 40 instead of 15, the spray length can be reduced without a drop in wash quality. Since the washer tank has been increased from 600 to 1000, the pump must be size appropriately. Tank volume cannot be less than 3 times the total pump volume or else you can possibly run the pump dry. In the previous configuration, the tank was 600 gallons and the pump was running at 481 GPM, which is not the correct ratio. A 1000-gallon tank and 300GPM pump is more appropriate. The increase in PSI makes up for the decrease in gallon per minute flow and spray bar impingement time. Also, by installing a larger tank, the time before the tank becomes saturated with soil and stamping lubricant is increased, thereby decreasing the amount of time that production must be stalled in order to clean the machine.

In terms of maintenance, the spray stages will also be easier. The pump will be a vertical barrel mount pump, which can be removed without draining the tank. The spray nozzles are quick change, for easy maintenance. The nozzles and headers are customized to optimize the coverage of parts as well.

After the wash stage but before the rinse stage, a blow off feature is installed that was not present on the previous machine. Using a stripping air knife system running at 25 horsepower and delivering up to 600 cfm of air, the parts will be stripped of excess or puddles of water before being sent to rinsing. This stage helps to prevent the cleaner from being carried over to the rinse tank from the wash tank, thereby making the rinsing stage more effective. There will always be wash water rinsed off into the rinse tank, but carrying the water on the part and dumping it into the rinse tank makes the rinse tank just another part of the wash tank and diminishes efficiency and efficacy.

Welding metalwork pieces such as those made from aluminum is relatively easy as it melts at a much lower temperature and does not crack after solidifying. Aluminum welding is done according to the type of aluminum used such as commercial grade aluminum having 99 percent purity, non-heat treatable alloys containing small amounts of manganese (Mn) or magnesium (Mg), and heat treatable alloys containing copper, silicon, zinc, or magnesium.

Work pieces made from these types of aluminum are easier to weld whereas aluminum work pieces containing copper or lead additives are difficult to weld and often lead to cracking while welding.

Aluminum welding methods include MIG and TIG welding, apart from conventional techniques such as gas, plasma, resistance welding, and welding with covered electrodes. The TIG technique is used when there is a need for good surface finishes and when welding from one side is not accessible, such as when welding pipes, and when repairing castings. The MIG technique is better suited for welding thicker aluminum work pieces at a faster rate and for achieving long, continuous welds. This technique has a lower heat input, which results in less distortion in the welding zone.

The latest aluminum welding technique involves the use of pulse arc welding combined with MIG that give much better results as compared to conventional methods. This technique gives better control of the molten pool in the case of thin material, makes the arc more stable, reduces spatters, and mitigates the risk of welding imperfections.

Welders need to take a few precautions while welding aluminum work pieces as the higher melting point of oxide that forms on its surface, when mixed into the molten pool, can cause welding defects. The surface of work pieces that are to be welded need to be scraped or brushed clean using stainless steel wire brush immediately before welding.

It is important to note that these cases are rare. Why And Why Not Opt For An Aluminum Sliding Door

Aluminum doors are once popular in the home building industry. With the changes in architectural taste, however, many people opted for different styles of sliding doors. Nonetheless, even when the interest in this type of door has already declined, it still has various advantages that could not be provided by other types of doors.

For one, aluminum pocket doors are great space savers. They could be used in several instances when space is an issue. For example, a room which could not be fixed with a hinge door could make use of a pocket door. This is the case when there is a permanent obstruction along the pathway where the door swings. Since the door runs along a hidden track and vanishes inside a pocket in the wall, there is no longer a need to open the door fully by swinging. Thus, the door does not require more space before it could be opened. Also, a pocket door could effectively replace a standard door when there is no other way but hide the door inside the walls.

Aluminum sliding doors is also a great alternative to ordinary wood, vinyl or plastic doors. This is because the doors are predicted to capture the future trend in home designing alongside glass and other metals.

There are downsides to using the doors though. For one, these doors could not be used in places where there are extreme temperatures as aluminum tends to adopt to the temperature of its surrounding. This would not help neutralize the heat or the coldness inside a room, for example. Also, aluminum, unlike wood, glass and fiberglass doors, tends not to blend in with most architectural design. For instance, the doors would not work well with Victorian-style inspired homes. They are, however, common among conventional houses where steal panels and other metals are used in decorating the house.

Also, one cannot really play well with colors on the doors. Usually, homeowners have to settle with the metallic look. This doesn't say that the natural aluminum surface is not good. In fact it is. However, for people who are fond of playing with colors, the doors may not be the best choice.

Another drawback to using the doors is that they tend to catch the atmosphere of large kitchens since they are usually associated with the kitchen doors of most restaurants. But again, this may not be as bad at all since many people actually love to create a certain atmosphere in their kitchen that may only be contributed to metals.

A change of look is what a sliding door could give when used in residential homes. In the industrial settings however, they have become the mainstay.
